Milwaukie, Ore.-based Biomass Renewable Technologies Inc. has signed an agreement with Whole Energy Fuels Corp. out of Bellingham, Wash., to manage the marketing, sales, production and deployment of its proprietary biodiesel production processes and equipment.

BRT, a chemical process development company, holds patents for several renewable energy technology processes, including those for biodiesel, gasification and anaerobic digestion. Regarding biodiesel technologies, BRT offers both biodiesel production systems and add-on specialty modules.

Since few completely new biodiesel plants are being built right now, the add-on specialty modules are a significant area of focus for BRT. One such module is designed to aid plants that are using high free fatty acid feedstock. According to BRT CEO Davis Clements, facilities employing that type of feedstock need a way to reduce high free fatty acids to an easily treatable level. "One of the offerings we have is a high free fatty acids system that will take and reduce the free fatty acids down," he said. "That can integrate directly into an existing plant." Other modules offered by the company can solve problems associated with methanol recovery, sterol removal, feedstock de-gumming and product purification.

While BRT is adept at identifying problems in biodiesel production and designing technologies to solve those problems, Clements said that his company is less experienced with marketing those solutions to consumers. By leveraging Whole Energy's marketing expertise, Clements said BRT's customers will be better served. "I think it's a very complementary arrangement that we've come to," he said. "It's really a collaboration building from two different sets of strengths."

Under the agreement, Whole Energy will provide marketing, project management and customer service for the deployment of BRT's technologies and processes. "We continue to support regional production and markets that prefer regional products, and that often depends on technical expertise," said Whole Energy CEO Atul Deshmane. "The process technology experience of BRT both supplements and compliments our team."

Clements added, "We're enjoying and looking forward to a much stronger, more viable [biodiesel] industry as a whole. And, we are looking forward to taking our parts and participating in that industry."
