As announced at the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo 2004 in Palm Springs, Calif., Clean Diesel Technologies Inc. (CDTI) has discovered a fuel blend that reduces particulate matter by 23 percent and NOx by 5 percent, according to David Whitwell, vice president and CFO.
The blend includes the CDTI's patented additive, Platinum Plus, along with a B20 biodiesel blend with No. 1 diesel fuel. According to a company press release, the CDTI blend beat a commercial ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel in reducing particulate matter, NOx and carbon monoxide.
In addition, biodiesel enhances the lubricity of No. 1 diesel, and No. 1 diesel helps improve the cold-weather performance of biodiesel, the company claims.
At the National Biodiesel Conference, Steve Howell, technical director of the National Biodiesel Board, reportedly said that in most biodiesel testing, NOx was the only emission that biodiesel failed to reduce. With CDTI's additive, reducing NOx is now possible, according to Whitwell.
Testing was conducted at the Southwest Research Institute, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.
Platinum Plus is a registered additive with the Environmental Protection Agency. It is available to the public.
