Case IH backs biodiesel use in equipment

Case IH approved the use of blends of up to B5 (meeting ASTM 6751 standards) in its line of tractors. The company said B5 won't affect any pre-existing or new Case IH product warranties. Case IH is a brand of CNH, a global leader in agricultural and construction equipment.
Gary Stanek, director of engine product development for CNH in North America, said the push for biodiesel use in Case IH equipment began in part because of customer demand in the European market. CNH has tested rapeseed-based biodiesel, which has been common in Europe since the late 1980s. Soy-based biodiesel has been tested for about four years. The approved B5 blend was tested in laboratory conditions and field-tested by engineers and customers.

CNH is currently evaluating the possibility of using B20 blends in its equipment.

An industry standard for B20 blends and a biodiesel quality control system may hinge on that decision. CNH is working with the National Biodiesel Board to implement the fuel and quality standards.

Case IH does have several biodiesel service recommendations for B5. The first is to ensure the biodiesel is ASTM 6751 standard. Case IH recommends sourcing B5 only from accredited producers and certified marketers. The company does not recommend altering oil change intervals or leaving the fuel in engines for more than four months. Case IH urges users to discontinue biodiesel use in the winter months because of the increased cloud point. They also recommend draining the fuel filter trap more frequently and wiping up any spills immediately.
