German biodiesel consumption continues to decline
German biodiesel consumption is on the decline in 2015. According to figures just published by the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA), it dropped particularly sharply in September.
At around 165,000 tons (approximately 50 million gallons), the use of biodiesel in blends was down about 15 percent from the same month the previous year. By contrast, demand for petroleum diesel is brisk, rising 1 percent in the wake of low crude oil prices, according to Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft mbH (AMI). In light of this, the blending quota of biodiesel fell to 5.15 percent, from 5.85 percent this August and just less than 6 percent in September 2014. This is the lowest level seen since April 2013. Over the year as a whole, the blending quota of biodiesel until September this year amounted to 6 percent, down 0.5 percentage points from the year-ago level.
September consumption of bioethanol declined from the previous month, but was stable compared to the same month the previous year. The blending quota saw a slight rise to 6.5 percent due to a drop in gas consumption.
