Planters' Nutmobile to run on biodiesel

By Bryan Sims | March 01, 2011

At a sustainability showcase in Los Angeles hosted by leading environmental organization Global Green USA, leading snack nut brand Planters unveiled its redesigned Nutmobile capable of running up to a B20 blend. The traveling promotional vehicle will tour the country and visit over 16 cities during its 2011 “Naturally Remarkable” campaign.

Designed and built by Massachusetts-based builder Turtle Transit, the Nutmobile is based on a 2011 Isuzu NPR box truck. In addition to being fueled on biodiesel, the peanut-shaped advertising vehicle is outfitted with solar panels on the roof, a wind turbine, LED interior lighting, recycled wood used in interior flooring sourced from an 1840s barn in Pennsylvania and reclaimed headlights, windows and a windshield frame. Ironically, the biodiesel isn’t derived from peanut oil.

During the “Naturally Remarkable” sustainability tour, Planters, in conjunction with The Corps Network, intends to transform vacant unused land into peanut-shaped urban parks—called Planters Groves—in four U.S. cities. The designs for each park are intended to capture the unique aspect of the city, along with a statue of the iconic Mr. Peanut seated at a bench to create an alluring landmark for the space. The Planters Nutmobile will appear at all Planters Grove events and travel to an additional 12 cities to promote community volunteerism through The Corps Network.

“We couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate our ongoing sustainability efforts than with Global Green, one of the most respected environmental organizations,” said Jason Levine, senior director of marketing for Planters. “During this tour, wherever we go and whatever we do, Planters’ intent is to leave these communities more ‘Naturally Remarkable’ than when we found them and to plant something forward for future generations to enjoy.”
