Canadian survey reveals canola/soy perspective on biodiesel

The results are in for an AgCall Inc. survey that asked over 300 Canadian canola and soybean growers their perspective on biodiesel, and the numbers show unquestionable support for biodiesel. The survey, conducted completely via telephone over a seven day period, yielded the following results:

-66 percent of respondents indicated that they are aware of the 2 percent renewable fuel standard for biodiesel in Canada.

-87 percent of respondents support using Canadian grown canola/soybeans in the production of biodiesel.

-90 percent of respondents agree that increased demand for canola/soybeans created by biodiesel production would benefit growers.

-81 percent of respondents support a federal renewable strategy that would promote the use of canola/soybeans in the production of biodiesel.

According to Ed Mazurkewich, business development consultant for AgCall, “The survey results illustrate strong grower support for a federal renewable fuel strategy that would utilize canola/soybeans. Biodiesel production will happen in Canada and growers would like the 2 percent bio-content source to be Canadian grown crops.” Mazurkewich also said that during the survey the participants were only aided with questions when those participants needed further clarification. “We captured comments that any growers gave us, but there weren’t a whole lot of them during the survey,” he said. “Common comments for utilizing oilseeds for biodiesel were that it gives growers market options for their canola/soy.”

The survey was conducted for the Canadian Canola Growers Association and the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association. “This is the only survey that I know of that represents a voice from Canadian growers, so it should be fairly important. Its actual importance will be dependent on the view from biodiesel stakeholders in Canada,” Mazurkewich said.
