Albemarle acquires alternative biodiesel catalyst firm Catilin
Baton Rouge, La.-based global specialty chemical firm Albemarle Corp. has expanded its presence in the biofuels market by acquiring Catilin Inc., a biodiesel technology developer that employs unique heterogeneous biodiesel catalysis in the production process.
According to Albemarle, Catilin’s technology and products will strengthen its offerings for the renewable fuels market as well as foster research, development and distribution synergies as a result of the acquisition. Terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.
Albemarle offers catalytic solutions for both biodiesel and renewable diesel routes of production within its trademarked GoBio suite of catalysts. Albemarle produced the catalysts for NExBTL, a process developed by Neste Oil’s renewable diesel production. Albemarle also offers catalytic services for other production processes related to first-, second- and third-generation biomass conversion methods such as for Fischer-Tropsch, pyrolysis oil upgrading and syngas-to-methanol.
“We are excited to offer Catilin technology alongside our existing GoBio portfolio to customers in the fast-growing renewable fuels market,” said John Nicols, Albemarle’s vice president of catalysts. “Albemarle is committed to expanding our presence in this market and to offering our global customers a broader portfolio of biofuel catalysts.”
Albemarle launched its Alternative Fuels Technology division in 2007. Since then, the company has grown into the world’s largest supplier of heterogeneous catalysts to the biofuels market.
