Danish bus operator Arriva recently placed an order with Sweden-based Scania AB for more than 100 new diesel buses for use in Cophenhagen. The vehicles will be fueled with a blend of biodiesel. According to Scania, Arriva already operates a large fleet of Scania buses.

The new Scania buses are all OmniLink models, and will be delivered in three versions. The company’s Press Manager Hans-Ake Danielsson noted the order includes three-axle buses with capacities of 107, and two-axle buses that can hold up to 65 passengers. All the buses are equipped with Scania’s 5-cylinder, 9-liter diesel engine that meets Enhanced Environmental friendly Vehicle (EEV) requirements. The vehicles are also designed to be fueled with biodiesel blends up to B100.

In fact, Danielsson said that all buses manufactured by Scania are capable of operating on B100. “Scania supports and encourages the use of up to 100 percent biodiesel in all its diesel engines,” he said. While Danish diesel fuel currently contains 7 percent biodiesel, Danielsson noted that Arriva intends to increase its use of biodiesel. While all of Scania’s buses are compatible with B100, Danielsson stressed that it is the availability, taxation and cost of biodiesel that determines demand for the fuel—not engine technology.

According to Danielsson, Scania also has experience manufacturing buses that operate on ethanol-blended fuels. Although the majority of demand of the company’s ethanol and biodiesel powered buses has historically come from Europe, the company recently started to deliver a batch of 60 ethanol buses to Brazil for use in Sao Paulo.
