RFS opponents exploiting drought in election year politics

By Ron Kotrba | August 28, 2012

Michael McAdams, president of the Advanced Biofuels Association, issued the following statement Aug. 28 regarding requests for U.S. EPA to waive the renewable fuel standard (RFS) due to drought and “severe economic hardship.”

The RFS is critical to maintaining biofuels as a pillar of U.S. energy policy now, and moving into the future. Radical changes to, or the elimination of the RFS all together, will endanger our country's energy security.

The opponents of the RFS are exploiting the drought in the Midwest to roll back a policy they never supported in the first place. This disingenuous attack should be seen for what it really is—election year politics.

We are already seeing the marketplace responding. As the price of corn has gone up, production of ethanol has gone down. At this time, further action by the government is unwise and unnecessary.

The fact is that the RFS is fundamentally working. It is helping to expand markets for many types of biofuels while working to reduce the nation's reliance on overseas oil. On Aug. 21, former members of Congress, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D) and Tom Ewing (R) penned a joint, bipartisan op-ed in Politico warning against the dangers of altering the RFS, pointing out the fact that thanks to the “RFS and related policies, the advanced and cellulosic biofuels industry has gone from a science experience to a job-creating industry in the very communities now hit by the drought.” We couldn't agree more.
