First cellulosic diesel RINs generated in November
The U.S. EPA has published compliance data on the renewable fuel standard (RFS) for November 2012. According to the agency, no D3 renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated during the month for cellulosic biofuels. However, I,741 D7 RINs were generated for cellulosic diesel. In addition, a new high for D5 advanced biofuel RIN generation was set, with approximately 111.49 million D5 RINs generated representing more than 110 million gallons of advanced biofuel production. Approximately 127 million D4 RINs for biomass-based diesel and 1.044 billion D6 RINs for renewable fuel were also generated during the month.
Regarding the volume of biofuel produced, the EPA’s statistics show that no cellulosic biofuels were produced during the month, while nearly 82.63 million gallons of biomass-based diesel, 110.16 million gallons of advanced biofuel, 1.044 billion gallons of renewable fuel and 1,024 gallons of cellulosic diesel were produced in November.
During the first 11 months of 2012, cellulosic ethanol production resulted in the generation of 20,069 RINs. During the same time period, nearly 488.13 million advanced biofuel RINs were generated for ethanol production, while approximately 2.705 million advanced biofuel RINs 196,124 advanced biofuel RINs were generated for biogas production. More than 1.49 billion biomass-based diesel RINs were generated for biodiesel production. In addition, slightly less than 11.94 billion renewable fuel RINs were generated for ethanol production, and more than 1.01 million renewable fuel RINs for biodiesel production where generated during the first 11 months of 2012. Cellulosic diesel RINs generated during the same time period equaled a total of 1,741.
The EPA estimates that all 20,069 of assigned cellulosic RINs generated through November 2012 are available. For cellulosic diesel, the agency estimates that 1,741 separated D7 RINs are available. In addition, more than 93.5 million assigned biomass-based diesel and nearly 1.5 billion separated biomass-based diesel RINs are available. For advanced biofuel, 55.33 million assigned RINs and 409 million separated RINs are available, while 754.6 million assigned renewable fuel and 11.1 billion separated renewable fuels RINs are available.
Data published by the EPA also shows that all 20,069 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated by domestic producers. Domestic producers also generated nearly 1.5 billion biomass-based diesel RINs. Importers generated an additional 49 million biomass-based diesel RINs, with foreign producers generating an additional 88.12 million. Nearly 41.72 million advanced biofuel RINs were generated domestically, with importers generating 466.13 million. All 1,741 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated domestically.
