A View From the Hill

Born and raised in Iowa, I grew up in a Midwestern environment that is leading the country in ethanol production. Throughout my life and into college, ethanol and other renewable fuels have been visible in my everyday experiences.

Having grown up in an agriculturally influenced setting, I understand the significance of ethanol production and use. Around my hometown, E85 is available at many gas stations, which is not the case for many other areas around the United States. My school, Iowa State University, conducts extensive research on renewable fuels and ethanol in particular. In addition, ethanol biorefineries in my community greatly enhance the economic conditions of the surrounding rural population.

In Washington, D.C., I have witnessed how the farmers at home collaborate with lobbyists on Capitol Hill to achieve incredible progress toward the revolutionary goal to better our country with renewable fuels. The unique opportunity to see how these individuals, seemingly worlds apart, work together with a common purpose has been incredibly educational.

In the Midwest, I see the industry benefiting farmers and providing skilled jobs for plant workers. Working at the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), I observe the organization's ability to act as a voice for all individuals playing a role in the ethanol industry. From press conferences to congressional testimony, the RFA won't rest until the voices of industry members are heard around Capitol Hill and the world.

Aside from necessary daily tasks like contacting media outlets and monitoring exposure and legislation, the staff of the RFA ensures that industry happenings are supported and publicized. They travel around the United States to visit biorefineries, celebrate plant groundbreakings and grand openings, and generate interest and excitement about an industry that is working to sustain America's economic, environmental and energy security.

As ethanol plays an ever-increasing role in America's future energy sustainability, interning at the RFA has allowed me to further support the goals of an industry that is valued in my home-state communities. I am privileged to play a role in benefiting our nation through this respected and influential organization.
