There are basically two ways to extract oil from soybeans. One is a mechanical means, crushing or pressing them with extruders or other machines. The other way is to "flatten" the beans, treat them with hexane, an oil absorbing chemical and then extract the oil from solution. Crown Iron Works Co. of Minneapolis has offered oil crushing and extraction technology for years, but now has a different "route to reach the same end" by acquiring a similar system from Hamburg, Germany's Harburg Freudenberger.
"This gives us a name and a reputation to reach more agricultural interests in Eastern Europe that might be much more familiar with Harburg than they are with Crown," said Derek Masterson of Crown Iron Works. "This [acquisition] doesn't add a specific process to our portfolio of services, but it gives us more exposure to certain parts of the world."
"The acquisition encompasses all design and technology in the Solvent Extraction division including the carousel extractor and the flash desolventizing system," Crown Iron Works stated. The carousel extractor is a self-cleaning apparatus operating at capacities up to 4,000 tons per day, and is ideal for smaller areas due to its compact cylindrical design.
