Another biodiesel-invested company announced plans to boost capacity at its oilseed crush facilities.
Archer Daniels Midland Co. announced late yesterday it is planning to increase its North American oilseed crushing capacity through expansions at oilseed crushing plants in the United States and Canada. The move is partially spurred by the burgeoning demand for soy oil by the biodiesel industry.
ADM joins
Bunge North America, the North American operating arm of Bunge Ltd., which announced in October an expansion of its soybean processing plant in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The facility will have an annual crush capacity of nearly 77 million bushels upon completion in fall 2008. Carl Hausmann, president and CEO of Bunge North America, said the decision to expand was made in part by the growing biodiesel industry.
ADM's expansions, which are scheduled to be completed in mid-2008, will support the company's two North American biodiesel facilities in Mexico, Mo., and Velva, N.D. ADM is building an 85 MMgy biodiesel plant in Velva, N.D., which is expected to start-up in April 2007. The company also has a stake in Mid-America Biofuels, a 30 MMgy plant that recently began production in Mexico, Mo. The plant was built by Crown Iron Works and ADM.
"Expanding our crush capacity will enable us to meet the increased demands for vegetable oil and oilseed proteins, driven by the world's growing need for energy and food," said Scott Fredericksen, president of ADM's North American Oilseed Processing.
Five of ADM's soybean crushing plants will be expanded in Quincy, Ill., Frankfort, Ind., Mexico, Mo., Fremont, Neb., and Des Moines, Iowa. Two canola crushing plants will be expanded in Velva, N.D., and Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada.
Bunge and Biodiesel Investment Group LLC announced the creation of Biofuels Company of America, a joint venture to build a 45 MMgy biodiesel plant adjacent to Bunge's soy processing facility in Danville, Ill.
