South Carolina-based Agri-Tech Producers LLC has been issued an exclusive license to a torrefaction technology developed by North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Torrefaction involves using extreme heat on biomass in a low-oxygen environment, during which volatile organic compounds, water and hemicellulose are separated from the cellulose and lignin to produce a fuel that is easier to transport and store and is carbon neutral.

As of late January, Agri-Tech Producers possessed all patent-pending rights of the Autothermic Transportable Torrefaction Machine.

Joseph James, president of Agri-Tech Producers, said that obtaining the license will help the company introduce commercial units to the marketplace within the next year.

The company's effort toward commercialization is featured in the February issue of Biomass Magazine. (Read "A ‘Torrefic' Energy Solution.")
