Ameresco and the city of Phoenix broke ground Feb. 2 on a biogas energy project at the 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTTP), an event that was open to the public and featured a variety of speakers, including city leaders and Ameresco representatives.
Under terms of the project, announced in August, Ameresco will build, own, operate and maintain the facility. It will process raw biogas into renewable natural gas (RNG), which will be delivered into the Kinder Morgan Natural Gas Transmission Interstate Pipeline for sale to third parties for use as transportation fuel.
A small portion of gas generated at the WWTP was already used as boiler fuel at the plant, but the majority has been flared off. With a project capacity of 3,250 standard cubic feet per minute, the RNG facility is expected to be largest of its kind in the U.S.
The project is projected to produce $1.2 million in annual revenue, to be shared among the cities that jointly own the 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant, including Glendale, Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Phoenix, which has a goal of 15 percent renewable energy citywide.
