Nacogdoches Power LLC has developed a 100 megawatt biomass project in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Austin Energy is considering a deal to draw biomass generated electricity from Nacogdoches Power.

"Under its climate protection plan, Austin Energy has a goal to meet 30 percent of its energy needs through renewable resources by 2020 and to achieve carbon neutrality on any new generation units," said Tony Callendrello, vice president of Nacogdoches Power.

One interesting aspect of this project is the, "fuel source will be waste wood, which the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has concluded will not only be carbon neutral but actually carbon negative," Callendrello said. "In addition to environmental benefits, we believe that our project offers significant operational benefits to Austin Energy since our plant will be able to generate power reliably and predictably throughout the year, is dispatchable and is being built in an area where transmission capacity is available," he added.
