The USDA has announced two new Biomass Crop Assistance Program areas, and the expansion of one existing project area through a  $9.6 million round of funding. In New York, ReEnergy Holding LLC will enroll 3,500 acres in a fast-growing shrub willow that will help the biomass power developer generate 100 MW of power. Chemtex International, a division of Gruppo Mossi & Ghisolfi, has been awarded approximately $4 million to develop 4,000 acres of miscanthus and switchgrass in North Carolina. The energy crop project areas will be spread throughout 11 counties, with the resulting crops used, in part, to feed a 20 MMgy cellulosic ethanol plant that will produce onsite biogas for power. Finally, an existing project area in northeast Arkansas will expand giant miscanthus grown throughout three counties to nearly 8,000 acres.
