The biomass industry can make better use of funding already available under existing U.S. farm legislation, presenter and policy advocate Andy Olsen told participants at the International Biomass Conference & Trade Show on April 16 in Minneapolis.

Olsen pointed attendees to the availability of so-called Section 9006 grants available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Companies can use these USDA grants to refit existing boilers to burn biomass and upgrade existing ethanol plants for cellulosic production.

"I think that if the biomass industry used that program to the extent that some others in the energy-efficiency industry do it can really help make some projects pencil out and get some projects online," Olsen told Biomass Magazine. He is based in Madison, Wis., as a policy advocate with the Environmental Law & Policy Center, an environmental-advocacy group that works on clean-energy resources.

USDA Section 9006 grants for renewable energy and energy efficiency improvements help farmers, ranchers and rural small businesses fund energy-efficiency upgrades and new renewable-energy systems. The next deadline is June 16.
