Producers in Missouri and Kansas have come together to form the National Biomass Producers Association, which is dedicated to providing information and support to agricultural producers who grow energy crops. Association President Ed Cahoj said the organization officially incorporated in August and is dedicated to the sustainable production of crops for the biofuels industry.

The short-term aim of the organization is to make information on growing and selling energy crops available to producers, Cahoj said. The group is working with agronomists to organize the available data on switchgrass in a form that will be useful to producers. "Right now, no one has all the answers," he said. "Everyone is in a learning curve. As I was doing my research and building a network, I found that there are not enough experts in this country for every little start-up group to have their own nucleus of experts."

Cahoj said the association will act as an umbrella group for biomass producers who want to organize locally. "The main goal is to let small groups organize in any area that can produce enough feedstock to bring in a processor," he said. "There is a tremendous amount of legwork involved."
