BIOX Corp. recently announced the company's intention to scale up its 1-million liter (264,000-gallon) per year pilot plant to a 60-million liter (15.9-million gallon) per year facility in Hamilton, Ontario.
The pilot plant has been operating since April 2001, BIOX's Scott Lewis told Biodiesel Magazine. As of July 19, fabrication had begun and site-planning approval was in progress.
"All systems are go," Lewis said.
According to a company press release, the BIOX Process is a method for turning any viable feedstock, including vegetable oils, agricultural seed oils, waste animal fats, greases and recycled cooking oils, into biodiesel at a cost comparable to petroleum diesel.
Dr. David Boocock, past chairman of the Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry Department, University of Toronto, has transformed the production process through the selection of inert co-solvents that generate an oil-rich one-phase system. This reaction is over 99 percent complete in seconds at ambient temperatures.
Sustainable Development Technology Canada has approved a $5 million contribution in principle toward the development of the BIOX Process.
