Boulder Canyon Natural Foods incorporates NatureFlex film in chip bags

North American snack food manufacturer Boulder Canyon Natural Foods has introduced a renewable and fully compostable package comprised of Innovia Films’ branded NatureFlex film in its line of All Natural Kettle Cooked Potato Chips bags. It’s the first snack food bag on the market to be made from a material that incorporates a metalized film.
NatureFlex is a cellulose-based flexible film made from wood pulp that has a Forestry Stewardship Council or similar certification. The 7.5-ounce bag contains over 90 percent renewable content as measured via ASTM 6866 and is also compostable in both home and industrial settings. The compostable bag has 180 days or less compostability measure per the Biodegradable Products Institute. Not only is it compostable, but NatureFlex is also suitable for emerging waste-to-energy applications such as anaerobic digestion.
According to Boulder Canyon, its chip bag with NatureFlex "feels" and "sounds" like a traditional paper bag of chips compared to noisier corn starch-based bags on the market to date.
"Our new compostable packaging ensures that we maintain that commitment by setting a positive example for the industry, educating consumer on key issues and enabling them to play a role in improving the environment by diverting waste away from landfills," said Steve Sklar, senior vice president of marketing for Boulder Canyon.

NatureFlex films also offer advantages for packing and converting, such as inherent deadfold and anti-static properties, high-gloss and resistance to grease and oil. It’s also ideal for packaging confectionary, bakery goods, fresh produce, dried good, snacks, household products and personal care items.
"We recommended NatureFlex to Boulder Canyon for a number of reasons," said Bill Reilly, development manager for Genpack, a Canadian-based packaging converter that spearheaded the research and development using NatureFlex film supplied by Innovia Films. "First and foremost, the film performs well technically and has excellent moisture, gas and light barrier properties that enhance shelf life and protect the product. Secondly, NatureFlex is very well aligned with Boulder Canyon’s sustainability goals so we knew it was an excellent fit for their company values as well as the application."
