Chevron, Solazyme partner

March 17, 2008

Chevron Technology Ventures, a division of Chevron USA Inc., and biotech company Solazyme announced in January that they will jointly develop and test biodiesel made from algae using Solazyme's proprietary technology to optimize algal oil production. This oil can also be used to produce biobased jet fuel.

Chevron has been actively working to develop renewable fuels projects. It is currently researching technology to produce algae-based liquid transportation fuels at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo.

Solazyme teamed up with Imperium Renewables Inc. in 2007 to grow microalgae and convert it to biodiesel.
