Clean Cities Conference showcases biodiesel

June 1, 2005

The Clean Cities Conference & Expo is a unique event that brings all of the alternative fuels together to work toward decreased petroleum consumption in the United States. This year's conference, held May 1-4 in Palm Springs, Calif., cultivated harmony in the alternative fuels industry at a time when diversifying our country's energy portfolio is as crucial as ever.

Biodiesel had a strong presence at this year's conference. The National Biodiesel Board (NBB) sponsored the event, as did fuel supplier World Energy Alternatives LLC. Biodiesel Industries and West Central exhibited in the trade show along with Biodiesel Magazine, which announced free subscriptions for all Clean Cities coordinators. The coordinators play a crucial role in educating fleet managers and other potential users about the benefits of biodiesel.

"The biodiesel industry is off to a great start in educating the public about the benefits of biodiesel," said Shelley Launey, director of Clean Cities, a U.S. DOE program. "Through efforts like participation in our conference and in supporting the Clean Cities coordinators throughout the country, that public education is paying off. Biodiesel is the fastest growing alternative fuel in the nation, and this is a critical time in our history for reducing our reliance on petroleum."

Biodiesel speakers at this year's conference included Dave Williamson of the Ecology Center with the city of Berkeley, Calif.; Claude Masters of Florida Power & Light; Gary Funk of the U.S. Marine Corps; and Scott Hughes, Tom Verry and Jenna Higgins of NBB. Program highlights included an appearance from Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.; Paul Roberts, author of The End of Oil; and actor/environmental steward Ed Begley, Jr. John Davis, the host of the PBS show MotorWeek, also debuted a feature on biodiesel that will appear on the show this summer.
