Colonial Pipeline's new fuel grades permit renewable diesel

BY Ron Kotrba

Platts put out an interesting story yesterday about Colonial Pipeline getting ready to offer three new ultra low sulfur diesel grades that permit the blending of up to 5 percent renewable diesel beginning Jan. 3. Renewable diesel is being defined as hydrotreated biomass feedstock.

Platts reports the new grades are to be called 63 (ULSD with 5 percent renewable diesel), 69 (segregated 15 ppm renewable diesel) and 83 (dyed off-road ULSD with 5 percent renewable diesel), and all will be permitted to blend with renewable diesel downstream of Meridian, Miss.

The report said Colonial Pipeline, which runs from the Gulf Coast through the Southeast and into the Mid Atlantic, has received multiple shipper requests to move either neat or blended renewable diesel.

Incidentally, Dynamic Fuels' 75 MMgy renewable diesel plant just started operating in Louisiana.
