Several ethanol plants have received the CSX Chemical Safety Excellence Award for their commitment to rail car maintenance and safety, as well as safe loading practices. To be eligible for the award, companies must ship 600 or more railcars annually on CSX Transportation Inc. operated rails, and have zero non-accidental releases during the year.
VeraSun Energy Corp., recognized for the second consecutive year, said its award announcement that the company had shipped more than 5,500 carloads with CSXT during 2007, primarily originating from the company's ethanol production facilities in Aurora, S.D., Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Charles City, Iowa.
Among the 64 award recipients were the following ethanol plant companies: Ace Ethanol LLC, Archer Daniels Midland Co., Cargill Inc., Global Ethanol LLC, Granite Falls Energy LLC, Lincolnway Energy LLC, Poet LLC, and U.S. Bioenergy Corp. The companies received the award March 18 at the 13th Annual CSX Chemical Safety Excellence Award. The number of companies recognized in 2007 was up from 62 winning the safety award in 2006 and the 50 in 2005.
Poet's Chief Executive Officer Jeff Broin said the award reflects the combined efforts of many Poet employees. "The award is particularly meaningful considering that 2007 was the first year our plants produced more than 1 billion gallons of ethanol," Broin said. Glacial Lakes Energy Chief Executive Officer Tom Branhan said, "this award reflects the commitment to rail car maintenance and continuous safe tank car loading that GLE strives to maintain. We are very proud of our employees for their continued efforts to ensure a safe work environment."
CSXT is the principal operating company of CSX Corp., based in Jacksonville, Fla. CSX specializes in providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transloading services in 23 states.
