Burnsville, Minn.-based Diversified Ethanol Corp. has developed proprietary modular ethanol conversion units specially designed for breweries and microbreweries looking to capture off-spec brewery waste for ethanol production. The modular ethanol units are now commercially available.
Diversified Energy's technology will be a boon to breweries looking to increase revenue by converting waste into a high-value and salable product. "This new technology is clearly a breakthrough in recycling and in creating a new source of revenue for breweries," said Robert Johnson, chairman and chief executive officer of Greenbelt Resources, parent company of Diversified Energy. "Using our new sustainable ethanol plant design, our company will install ‘green' production plants into existing breweries and microbreweries throughout the U.S. Our small modular plant design makes ethanol production affordable for small- to medium-sized operations."
Currently, breweries pay to treat the waste to meet stringent statewide regulations and discharge it to local wastewater treatment plants. Diversified Energy's technology would eliminate or offset these costs. Ethanol-to-waste technology, which uses existing waste products that are freely available, is much more cost-effective and environmentally benign compared with conventional corn-based production methods, according to the company. "We're excited about our modular ethanol plant technology as it allows us to improve the environment by eliminating waste while producing a high-demand alternative energy product such as E85," Johnson said. "We also offer the breweries the needed assistance to sell their produced ethanol on the open markets and directly to the local communities, eliminating the need for cross-country transportation."
Diversified Ethanol designs and builds modular ethanol plants, which use its trademarked Butterfield Closed Cycle System, utilizing several proprietary technologies that increase production efficiency and reduce water input by 85 percent.
