Egger, Ontario Power Generation land awards at biomass conference

Biomass Magazine and the International Biomass Conference & Expo, currently underway at the Minneapolis Convention Center, have announced this year’s recipients of its annual industry awards, which were distributed during a ceremony prior to the April 21 general session.
The Excellence in Bioenergy award was granted to Christiane Egger, deputy manager of O.Ö. Energiesparverband, the energy agency of Upper Austria, and manager of Okoenergie-Cluster, a network of 170 companies active in renewable energy and efficiency. Egger is also vice president of FEDARENE, the European network of regional energy and environment agencies, and is an expert in building energy efficiency, biomass heating and dissemination and promotion of sustainable energy production and use.
Ontario Power Generation was named Groundbreaker of the Year. Its Atikokan Generating Station, the largest 100 percent biomass-fired power plant in North America, was designed to run on lignite coal. A $170 million conversion to wood pellets was completed last summer, and the facility now generates up to 200 MW of renewable power. OPG also successfully converted its Thunder Bay, Ontario, power station to advanced pellets, a facility that is now operated as a peaking station. On site to accept the award for OPG was Biomass Project Director Faron Rollins.
