The U.S. Energy Information Administration has released the April 2013 issue of its Short-Term Energy and Summer Fuels Outlook. The report predicts that wood biomass will be used to generate 105 gigawatt hours per day (GWh/d) of electricity in 2013. This is expected to increase to 111 GWh /d in 2014. Waste biomass is expected to hold steady at 56 GWh/d in both 2013 and 2014.

During the first quarter of 2013, wood biomass was used to generate an estimated 104 GWh/d of power. During the second quarter this is expected to decline to 98 GWh/d before increasing to 106 GWh/d and 111 GWh/d respectively during the third and fourth quarters.

Waste biomass was used to generate an estimated 53 GWh/d of electric power during the first quarter of 2013, increasing to an expected 54 GWh/d during the second quarter. Waste biomass is expected to generate 57 GWh/d of power in the third quarter and 56 GWh/d in the fourth quarter.

The electric power sector is expected to consume 191 trillion Btu of wood biomass in 2013, increasing to 191 trillion Btu in 2014. The sector is also expected to consume 261 trillion Btu of waste biomass in 2013 and 263 trillion Btu in 2014. The industrial sector is predicted to consume 1.25 quadrillion Btu of wood biomass this year, and 1.253 quadrillion Btu in 2014. The industrial sector is also expected to consume 180 trillion Btu of waste biomass in 2013, and 184 trillion Btu in 2014. The EIA predicts the commercial sector will consume 69 trillion Btu of wood biomass and 44 trillion Btu of waste biomass in 2013, and a respective 45 trillion Btu and 20 Btu in 2014. The residential sector is expected to consume an additional 417 trillion Btu of woody biomass and 40 trillion Btu of waste biomass in 2013. Consumption of wood biomass in the residential sector is expected to increase to 425 Btu in 2014, with waste biomass consumption holding steady at 40 trillion Btu.
