EIA updates bioenergy forecasts

Renewables are currently expects to account for 23 percent of U.S. electricity generation this year, increasing to 25 percent next year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released July 11. Renewables accounted for 22 percent of U.S. electricity generation last year.

Biomass is expected to account for 24.6 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity generation in 2023, increasing to 25.2 billion kWh in 2024. Biomass accounted for 26.7 billion kWh of electricity generation in 2022.

The electric power sector is expected to consume 0.202 quadrillion Btu (quad) of waste biomass this year, increasing to 0.203 quad next year. Consumption was at 0.213 quad in 2022. The sector is also expected to consume 0.184 quad of wood biomass in 2023, increasing to 0.191 quad in 2023, compared to the 0.2 quad consumed last year.

The industrial sector consumed 0.161 quad of waste biomass last year. Consumption is currently expected to expand to 0.163 quad in 2023 and be maintained at that level through 2024. The sector also consumed 1.278 quad of wood biomass last year, with consumption expected to increase to 1.303 quad this year and 1.356 quad next year.

The commercial sector consumed 0.037 quad of waste biomass last year. Consumption is expected to remain at that level in 2023 and increase to 0.038 quad in 2024. The sector also consumed 0.083 quad of wood biomass last year, with that level of consumption expected to be maintained this year and next year.

The residential sector consumed 0.539 quad of wood biomass in 2022. Consumption is expected to increase to 0.548 quad this year and be maintained at that level through 2024.

Across all sectors, waste biomass consumption was at 0.411 quad in 2022 and is expected to fall to 0.403 quad this year, increasing to 0.404 quad in 2024. Wood biomass consumption was at 2.1 quad in 2022 and is expected to reach 2.117 quad in 2023 and 2.178 quad in 2024.
