Bolingbrook, Ill.-based Elevance Renewable Sciences Inc. has signed a formal collaborative agreement with Wayne, N.J.-based International Specialty Products Inc. to evaluate and introduce to the market novel renewable waxes and derivatives as biocide carriers for wood/plastic composite applications.

Elevance and ISP have completed initial laboratory evaluations and have identified candidate waxes that are now moving into scale-up testing. Both companies expect to expand testing later this year with commercialization to begin by year’s end. Elevance’s renewable waxes are made from vegetable oils via its proprietary metathesis technology.

According to Andy Shafer, executive vice president of sales and market development for Elevance, both companies had several discussions prior to the announced collaboration about how Elevance’s renewable waxes could be utilized as carriers for ISP’s biocides into plastic/wood applications.

“What we did was we helped them look at how they could get their biocide into these plastic/wood composite processing applications in a way that used some of our products,” Shafer told Biorefining Magazine, adding that Elevance was able to modify its wax products tailored to ISP’s specified product performance standards.

“What’s neat is that our toolbox to modify the wax products that we make was robust and allowed us to do that in a very efficient manner and give them a generation of products that are quite exciting, in terms of working in this application,” Shafer continued. “Not only do we have a great collaboration going with ISP that’s resulting in commercializing a renewable product, but we also have demonstrated the capability to do that for other partners in other market applications that might need some product performance enhancements they couldn’t get otherwise.”

For 160 years, ISP has been a leading global supplier of specialty chemicals and performance enhancing products for a wide variety of personal care, pharmaceutical, food, beverage and industrial applications. ISP’s offers a range of biocide products tailored to various wood/plastic composite applications; most notably its trademarked line of PlastiGuard products, which are designed to provide biocidal protection for various plastic applications. ISP’s PlastiGuard lines of biocides are available in pellet, granular and liquid delivery forms.

“Elevance was a natural fit for this opportunity,” said Stephen Olsen, senior vice president of ISP Global. “Elevance’s latest generation of material is a promising development that will deliver our customers biocides in a more sustainable manner without compromising performance or cost.”
