The U.S. EPA has published renewable identification number (RIN) data for May, reporting nearly 1.62 billion RINs were generated during the month, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 6.76 billion.
According to EPA data, 16.01 million D3 cellulosic RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 62.85 million. So far this year, 1.78 million D3 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 35.86 million generated for renewable compressed natural gas and 27.06 million generated for renewable liquefied natural gas. Nearly 58.18 million D3 RINs have been generated domestically, with 6.52 generated by importers.
No D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in May. The net total for the first five months of the year is 114,835, all of which were generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers.
Nearly 7.35 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 24.69 million. Nearly 12.92 million have been generated for ethanol, with 8.17 million generated for naptha, 738,435 generated for heating oil, and 2.88 million generated for nonester renewable diesel. Nearly 22.83 million D5 RINs have been generated by domestic producers, with 1.87 generated by importers.

More than 1.28 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 6.14 billion. The majority, 5.9 billion, were generated for ethanol, with 30.12 million generated for biodiesel, 129.14 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 46,371 generated for butanol. Approximately 5.99 billion D6 RINs have been generated domestically, with 34.33 million generated by importers and 129.14 million generated by foreign entities.
More than 312.96 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in May, bringing the total for the first five months of the year to 1.26 billion. Most, 1.02 billion, were generated for biodiesel, with 245.65 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 587,905 generated for renewable jet fuel. Approximately 991.88 million have been generated domestically, with 159.15 million generated by importers and 112.23 million generated by foreign entities.
As of the close of May, the EPA estimates 7.5 billion RINs have been generated so far this year, with 326.5 million retired, 421.32 million locked and available and 6.76 billion unlocked and available.
