The U.S. EPA recently posted a notice to its website approving a fuel pathway for Renewable Energy Group Inc.’s Geismar, Louisiana, biorefinery. The plant can now generate D5 advanced biofuel renewable identification numbers (RINs) for naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) made from nonfood-grade corn oil.
According to the EPA, The Geismar plant uses a hydrotreating process to produce renewable diesel, naphtha and LPG fuel products from nonfood-grade corn oil using grid electricity, natural gas, and hydrogen produced from natural gas via steam methane reforming as energy sources.
Within the notice, the EPA said its assessment shows naphtha and LPG produced form nonfood-grade corn oil at the Geismar plant qualifies as an advanced biofuel under the Renewable Fuel Standard, assuming the fuel meets other definitional criteria for renewable fuel specified in certain regulations.
Naphtha produced using the REG Geismar process achieves a 78.2 percent greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction when compared to baseline petroleum fuel production. LPG produced at the facility achieves a 77.9 percent GHG reduction when compared to the same baseline.
