European biodiesel plant comes on line as another shuts down

Bio-Venta Ltd., an €85 million ($110 million), 30 MMgy biodiesel plant in Ventspils, Latvia, began production in late January, according to Graz, Austria-based design company BioDiesel International AG. Bio-Venta's rapeseed-oil-based, EN 14214-certified biodiesel is mainly produced for Statoil ASA of Norway. The plant has on-site crop storage and an oilseed press.
Meanwhile, Petrotec AG, a 50 MMgy German biodiesel producer, announced in late January that it had temporarily halted production, citing unfavorable markets.
