Evergreen Renewables starts production

June 1, 2006

Six years of research and development have resulted in success for a group of northwest Indiana biodiesel project developers. The crowning achievement comes in the form of a $10 million, 5 MMgy biodiesel facility in Hammond, Ind., straddling the Indiana/Illinois state line.

Located on the southeast outskirts of Chicago, Evergreen Renewables recently completed construction and conducted water testing prior to start-up in early May. Planning, engineering and permitting began in January 2005 on the project, according to spokesman Marc Wharton. Full-scale construction commenced in December. An unusually mild Chicago-area winter aided quicker-than-scheduled construction.

The plant is located at Wolf Lake Terminals, a fully integrated liquid storage and distribution facility. Wharton said the site was selected for a variety of reasons, including proximity to feedstock suppliers and fuel distributors.

The Evergreen Renewables plant is a partnership between biodiesel project developer Evergreen Renewables LLC, independent vegetable oil marketer Edible Oil Marketing LLC (EOM), and chemical and process engineering firm Process Technology Associates LLC.

Evergreen Renewables and in-house chemical and process engineers designed and built the facility, according to Wharton. The group is also marketing the plant's biodiesel. EOM will procure feedstock, which will be 100 percent refined soy oil provided by local crushers.

Wharton said the group plans on pursuing BQ-9000 producer accreditation once the plant is fully operational.

The project's partners have been investigating the viability of various biodiesel ventures for more than six years, according to Wharton. He said the project brings together a unique skill set of energy marketing, logistics, risk management, chemical and process engineering, and terminal operations expertise.

The Hammond plant may be expanded in the future, depending on local biodiesel market development and additional air permitting requirements. Wharton said Evergreen Renewables has also located additional sites to develop and expand production in other states.
