Genencor launches improved ethanol production enzyme

October 2, 2006

Genencor International, a division of Danisco A/S, introduced a new acid fungal protease enzyme product called Fermgen. According to a company press release, the trademarked product results in faster ethanol fermentation rates and yield for corn, milo or wheat-based substrates, as well as increased essential yeast nutrients in the form of amino acids, peptides and free amino nitrogen. Fermgen—already in use by some ethanol producers, according to company spokesman Daren Kwok—also hydrolyzes protein matrices in the corn kernel that bind the various fractions, enabling the hydrolysis of starch. It is effective at a pH of 3.0 to 4.5, the standard pH level used by the ethanol industry.
