House Ag Committee passes non-binding biofuels resolution

April 23, 2007

Taking its cue from ideas presented by the Energy Future Coalition, last week the House Agriculture Committee passed a non-binding resolution calling for 25 percent of the country's energy to come from renewable sources by 2025.

Introduced by Minnesota Democrat Collin Peterson, H. ConRes 25 moves on to the House Energy and Resource committees for consideration. A companion bill (S. ConRes 3) is also moving forward in Senate committees.

"There are many bills out there introduced by members of Congress who want to cash in on the rush to support renewable energy production," Peterson said. "However, we must be careful in our review of these proposals because some of them would cause more problems than they would solve for these growing industries.

"The 25 by '25 resolution is a statement of our commitment to support the development of renewable energy sources," Peterson added. "I believe that we can not only meet, but exceed the goal of 25 percent by 2025."
