Huish becomes part of growing industry standard for quality

September 1, 2006

In a rising tide of support for increased fuel quality, Huish Detergents has become the eighth accredited producer under the BQ-9000 voluntary quality control program. BQ-9000 is a cooperative and voluntary fuel quality program adopted by both the National Biodiesel Board (NBB) and the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association that helps achieve the highest level of quality assurance in the biodiesel industry. "We are pleased to now be an accredited producer of biodiesel under the BQ-9000 program," said Evan Frampton, senior vice president of Salt Lake City-based Huish Detergents. "The reason we sought out this distinction is because Huish Detergents has a reputation as a quality producer of household cleaning products, and we want to have the same reputation with our production of biodiesel. In markets where purchasers have a choice, they will go with the product that leaves no room for error." Seven other producers are accredited under the industry's voluntary quality control program, and many others are in the accreditation process. Peter Cremer North America in Cincinnati, Ohio; West Central/Renewable Energy Group in Ralston, Iowa; Johann Haltermann Ltd. in Houston, Texas; Arkansas Operations Eastman Chemical Company in Batesville, Ark.; Imperial Western Products in Indio, Calif.; Ag Processing Inc. in Omaha, Neb.; and SoyMor of Albert Lea, Minn., have also achieved this designation. Currently, Peter Cremer North America is the only certified marketer. The BQ-9000 program includes an audit of the companies that apply. The audits ensure the companies follow proper procedures for fuel storage, handling and management. The program creates a comprehensive quality system whereby fuel is consistently produced in accordance with ASTM D 6751 specifications and maintains its quality all the way to the customer's fuel tank. Even if fuel is produced in accordance with BQ-9000 and meets spec when it leaves the plant, poor handling of the fuel can lead to trouble. That is why it is equally as critical for distributors to become certified marketers as it is for producers to be accredited.

The BQ-9000 program is open to all companies that distribute, market or produce biodiesel, either in its pure form or for use in blending with petroleum diesel fuel in North America.
