Hawaiian Electric Co. announced Thursday that it has filed an application with the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission for approval of a biodiesel supply contract for a new electrical generation station. According to a Hawaiian Electric news release, Imperium Services LLC, an affiliate of Imperium Renewables, would be the provider of the biodiesel, anticipated to be between 5 MMgy and 12 MMgy.

According to Hawaiian Electric, construction on the 110 megawatt generating station is expected to begin in early 2008 with service beginning by mid-2009. Imperium currently operates a 100 MMgy biodiesel facility in Grays Harbor, Wash., but has no production in Hawaii. The company is in the process of developing a biodiesel facility at Kalaeloa Harbor, Hawaii.
