Every year since 2012, Biomass Magazine and BBI International have given out two awards at the International Biomass Conference & Expo: the Groundbreaker of the Year Award, and the Excellence in Bioenergy Award.
Now, despite what its name suggests, the project need not have actually broken ground in 2016. It could have broken ground any time in 2015, or even in 2014, as long as it was either recently completed, or well underway. “Groundbreaker” is sort of a double-entendre there; if the project is unique, different, exciting, innovative, etc., then we might consider it a groundbreaking project. Yeah. See what I did there?

We spent a lot of time humming and hawing over who the winners should be. A lot of the nominations are made internally, but we also really respect and seek out nominations from the industry. And we’re ready for those now.
I should also touch on the Excellence in Bioenergy Award. To sum it up in a few words, this person—or organization, group, etc.—will have made or is making outstanding, notable contributions to the industry in general, or a particular sector (biogas, pellets, biofuels, etc.). Some of the past winners include some good industry friends of mine.
A more lengthy description of each award can be found here, as well as a list of past winners and a link to each of the nomination forms. Don’t feel like you have to expound until you’ve written a novel; we can take care of that later.

The deadline for nominations is March 16. The winners are given some gorgeous, heavy-duty trophies during the general session of the International Biomass Conference & Expo, which is being held in Charlotte, North Carolina, this year.
Hope to see you there—it’s the event I look forward to most every year.
