The process of forming an international agency to promote worldwide transition to use renewable energy has not been easy. And why would it be? But it appears as though the final stage of founding the International Renewable Agency may be approaching as soon as January 2009.
Representatives from 51 nations attended a conference Oct. 23-24 in Madrid, Spain, and settled on a statute that will serve as the backbone of IRENA. The founding conference will be held Jan. 26, 2009, in Bonn, Germany, where the statute will be signed and IRENA will be officially established.
First suggested by German leaders, the purpose of IRENA will be to provide practical advice and support for both industrialized and developing countries to help improve their regulatory frameworks and build capacity. Because many countries have embraced the idea of renewable energy, but so many have not, IRENA is seen by its future members as a necessary agency with many obstacles to overcome before becoming a major force in spreading the notion of sustainable use of renewable energy at a global level.
Germany has been designated as depositary for the agency and will handle the necessary distribution of documents to participants, as well as invitations to the founding conference and respective documents to all United Nations member states.
