Japanese whalers destroy biodiesel-powered boat

February 23, 2010

Sea Shepherd, the New Zealand-based marine conservation, lost a biodiesel-powered boat from its fleet after it was struck by a Japanese whaling ship. The Ady Gil was basically destroyed in the accident, which Sea Shepherd says was an act of violence. One of Sea Shepherd's missions is the protection of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. "This is a substantial loss for our organization," said Captain Paul Watson. "The Ady Gil represents a loss of almost $2 million. However, the loss of a single whale is more important to us and we will not use the Ady Gil in vain. This blow simply strengthens our resolve. It does not weaken our spirits."
