Sustainability took center stage at the start of the 2008 National Biodiesel Conference in Orlando, Fla., where actress Darryl Hannah told the thousands in attendance, "If you are not involved in sustainable solutions, you are part of the problem."

The National Biodiesel Board has assembled a nine-member Sustainability Taskforce, and during this morning's general session, NBB Chairman Ed Hegland officially announced taskforce leader Emily Bockian Landsburg of Philadelphia Fry-O-Diesel. She told conference attendees that while she spends more time now defending biodiesel rather than promoting it, producers need to take a careful look at their production practices, and the social and environmental attributes associated with biodiesel. The general session included a discussion between Hegland, Landsburg and Graham Noyes of Imperium Renewables, who said the "environmental one-liners hit us hard," referring to the backlash Imperium received from the public and press after it announced last year that it may use palm oil for biodiesel production. He said Imperium has yet to use palm oil for biodiesel production.
