Mankato State researches biodiesel blends

May 1, 2004

A group of researchers at the Automotive Engineering Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato has begun a semester-long effort to establish an optimal blend of biodiesel by exploring its ignition characteristics and measuring its pollution emissions. Test results are expected to indicate the balance that assures biodiesel can be compared to conventional diesel by focusing on cetane, a compound found in diesel that indicates how easily the fuel will ignite. Ethanol's cetane number is low and biodiesel's cetane number is high. Researchers are trying to determine the blend of ethanol and biodiesel, also known as EB-diesel, that would best match diesel fuel properties. The Minnesota Corn Research & Promotion Council funded this project.
