Microbiogen develops yeast to utilize C5, C6 sugars

October 6, 2009

Microbiogen, an Australia-based yeast development company, was recently awarded a $2.5 million grant under the Australian government's Second Generation Biofuels Research and Development Program. The funding will be used to help the company further develop its new non-genetically modified yeast, which is cable of utilizing both C5 and C6 sugars. "Microbiogen's yeast is an improved variant of yeast that grows efficiently on xylose, ferments glucose and tolerates harsh industrial conditions," Microbiogen CEO Geoff Ball said. To date, the yeast strain has been tested on a variety of cellulose-rich biomass feedstocks, including corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, pine waste and newspaper. The company is in negotiations with potential collaborators to complete testing on an industrial-scale.
