After Argonne National Laboratory told Biodiesel Magazine in February that it was developing pipeline-ready biofuels-and that the institution did not consider biodiesel to be one of them-the National Biodiesel Board took offense. "Kinder Morgan is currently moving B5 on the Plantation Pipeline, and B5 has been piped in Europe for years," said Steve Howell, NBB technical director. "So saying that biodiesel isn't a pipeline fuel is just wrong."
Nevertheless, a major national laboratory isn't looking to biodiesel as it ramps up an effort to produce a "drop-in fuel" made from biobased materials. "It's a free country and they feel they can use traditional petroleum processing technology to produce a hydrocarbon fuel that's different than a methyl ester, but that doesn't give them the right to make false statements about biodiesel," Howell said.
Howell told Biodiesel Magazine that he is part of a task force looking for the approval of 100 parts per million in jet fuel, so that biodiesel can be piped in the fuel infrastructure that transports a variety of fuels. The current level is 5 parts per million in the United States. "The RFS will force the transport of biodiesel in pipelines because it is the most efficient way for oil companies to move it," Howell said.
