New biodiesel preservative available

November 1, 2005

Lanxess Deutschland GmbH has developed a new stabilizing agent to keep biodiesel fresh. The new biodiesel shelf-life improver, Baynox, was created to help ensure that unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) don't oxidize over short periods of time in heat, pressure and light. Oxidation "decomposes" long-chain fatty acids to shorter chains and also produces gummy polymers that can harm engine parts.

Baynox's active ingredient is a chemically simulated, highly effective tocopheral antioxidant (Vitamin E), which dissolves in the FAMEs and is the same viscosity and density as biodiesel. After heavy analysis, the Austrian Mineral Oil Co. awarded Baynox with the "no harm" certificate.
