A $1.7 million new biodiesel research facility will be built in Catawba County, N.C. Researchers from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., will be moving into the county's EcoComplex, a facility designed to promote economic development in the green energy, green business, agricultural, and environmental sectors, according to Barry B. Edwards, Catawba County's director of utilities and engineering. The facility, which is located near the county's Blackburn Landfill, will use energy produced within the EcoComplex to operate the landfill.
The university plans to lease the new 5,000-square-foot research facility for biodiesel testing and will grow test crops near the landfill to determine which crops produce the best oils in the local climate.
The Appalachian State University project has received more than $1 million from the Golden LEAF Foundation, the U.S. DOE, the University of North Carolina General Administration and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
