International growth consulting company Frost and Sullivan awarded Broomfield, Colo.-based Range Fuels Inc. its 2008 North American Fuels Technology Innovation Green Excellence of the Year Award on Sept. 17 at the Green Excellent Awards Banquet in San Francisco.
According to Frost and Sullivan, the award is presented to companies that have demonstrated superior technological advancement in the green energy field, and whose technologies are aligned with sustainable and environmentally-conscious objectives. The award also illustrates the company's leadership in developing new technology capable of transforming the existing fuels market while creating tremendous market potential.
Range Fuels' technology converts biomass materials into ethanol. Unlike many other cellulosic technologies, Range Fuels' process doesn't use enzymes. Biomass is fed into a converter. Heat, pressure and steam are used to convert the biomass into syngas, which is cleaned and passed over a proprietary catalyst and transformed into a stream of mixed alcohols. The alcohols are then separated and processed. The process is self-sustaining, produces few waste products, emits low greenhouse gas levels and produces high ethanol yields. The process can utilize a variety of organic feedstocks of various types, sizes and moisture contents.
The company broke ground on its first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol facility in November 2007 near Soperton, Ga. The first phase of construction, which will create a 20 MMgy facility, is expected to be completed in 2009. Additional phases of construction will expand the facility to 100 MMgy.
