South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds has appointed Hunter Roberts as energy policy director for the state. Roberts, an attorney who previously served as the interim state energy director, is a Pierre, S.D., native and a graduate of the University of South Dakota.

In his new position, Roberts will be the direct contact to energy groups on behalf of the governor. Serving within the S.D. Department of Tourism and State Development, Roberts will be responsible for recommending state actions and policies in relation to energy development, production and consumption within South Dakota.

Rounds said Roberts has the skills and ability to be a tremendous asset in advancing the goals for South Dakota's energy agenda. "I am excited to have someone of Hunter's caliber dedicated to this critical industry," Rounds said.

Richard Benda, secretary of the S.D. Department of Tourism and State Development, added that Roberts's knowledge and working relationships developed in the past year as interim director will be key to paving the way for South Dakota to achieve its goal of becoming a national leader in energy development. "This is an exciting time for the energy industry," Benda said.

South Dakota's current energy agenda has a significant focus of becoming a net energy exporter of ethanol, biodiesel and wind by 2010.
