SE Asia urged to become OPEC of biofuels

November 20, 2009

Thailand's energy minister proposed in his remarks at the Bangkok Biofuels 2009 forum in September that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a biofuels hub with the potential to become the OPEC of biofuels. Minister of Energy Wannarat Channukul pointed out Indonesia and Malaysia are the top two palm exporters while Thailand has the best location for biofuels development and production in the region. In other remarks, Richard Jones, deputy executive director of the International Energy Agency, said while biofuels currently account for only 1.5 percent of the 85 million barrels of oil used every day in global transport, if all countries in the world promoted biofuel that could surge to 25 percent, or 25 million barrels per day, by 2050.
